NEARLY BREAKS COURSE RECORD

London, June 17.

E. E. Whitcombe, the 23-year-old son of Ernest Whitcombe, the Ryder Cup international, yesterday Hartsbourne Manor had a splendid aggregate of 141 to head the 27 Southern qualifiers for the final stages of the Daily Mirror” £800 Assistants Tournament to be play- ed at Fulwell next month.

Whitcombe followed his first round score of 70 on Tuesday with a 71 yesterday, and he finished one stroke ahead of A. Waters (Tand- ridge), who had rounds of 70 and 72.

Two under 4's with seven holes to play, Whitcombe lost a chance of equalling the record when he took seven at "the 12th. He was bunkered and in playing out sent the ball under a hedge.

It was unplayable, but not aware at the time that a local rule allowed him to drop the ball within two club-lengths of the hole, he went back to the hazard to play another ball, and with a penalty stroke had 8-7. Qualifiers:

141: E. E. Whitcombe (Meyrick Park), *
