SKIP'S REPLY TO MR. BASTO'S SUGGESTIONS

·~· (Continued from Page 19)

had my sympathy: As long ago: as May of last year, I wrote an article on the subject of umpires or markers and their duties, es- pecially as regards foot-faulting, which is the chief point in Mr. Basto's very sound and reason- ably worded letter.

I have always advocated the appointing of umpires for all open competitions run under the auspices of the H.K.L.B.A. With the continued growth of these “ Open events, I realise that the difficulties of the Association have correspondingly increased, but I still contend that with the: hearty co-operation of the "vari-^^ ous clubs, a much more satisfac- tory position can be attaineder And this help from the clubs is, let me say right away, absolute- ly essential.

Without it, the Association can do nothing as it would be obviously impossible for all the officials be appointed from the small Sub- Committee which runs these com- petitions, so efficiently for us.

LITTLE HARDSHIP

It would entaîn little hardship on three or fours members of any given club to have to give up what- ever prospects they had of having a game on the night on which their club is staging the matches, espe- cially when it is realised that other clubs will be acting in like manner. So far I have been generaliging. but I must admit that I think that the question is more important when it comes s_to_singles events than it is when pairs or rinks are involved.

Admittedly an umpire is required in many of the latter, but I cannot help thinking that an official, how- ever careful and unassoming- may be, is apt to be rather in the way when it comes to pairs and rink games, just as much - to faulting occurs in these events as in the singles, though perhaps the perpetrators are not quite spicous.

APPEAL MUST BE MADE.

I would suggest that the a

ciation make a special appeal to the clubs to rally round and offer all the assistance they are able.

Regarding the fourth paragraph of Mr. Basto's letter, I do not agree with the writer nearly, as I have done on the other question.

True there may be several woods now in use in the Colony which might not pass the test of the 1.B.B. at the present moment. But I really think that their number is not as serious as it appears to Mr. Basto: Practically all the woods now! use have within the last few passed the test of the 13 whom all-the- well-known are officially appointed agents.

I agree with Mr. Basta th er or later there may official testing
