London, June 7. To lose the first five wickets forTM 48 runs on the opening morning of a match usually means that the side being fum- bled out so ignominiously make up their minds to do one thing. They beat a retreat into the most negative form of defen- | sive batsmanship, and," fighting

with their backs

arywall, hope to the legend-

against hope that they may put a stop to the disasters.

But Yorkshire are not the usual kind of side.At Brad- ford, against Kent, instead of standing still they turned the tables with such fierce courage that in a single hour the whole position was transformed and it was the Kent bowlers who found themselves standing still and helpless.

The last five Yorkshire batsmen actually added 249 in the most dar- ing fashion imaginable. Sellers, the captain, and Smailes, played chiefly for his bowling, were-to- gether in a seventh wicket partner- ship of 125, made in 75 minutes, and Sellers scored memorable century.

Yorkshire made 297 in the end, which Kent have replied with for none. Five for 47, six for 97. handsome indeed is the look of things now, by comparison «with what it was.. The 200 that hit for the last four wickets came in two hours and 10 minutes.

SPORTING WICKET

The pitch was what is called. sporting one; "green" in the morn- with moisture from recent rains. It helped the swing bow- lers, Watt and Todd, and Sutcliffe was caught by first, slip at 6, Mit- chell bowled at 29, and, with Ley- land edging the ball fatally, -three wickets were down for 33 and Watt had taken them for "TI in overs!

The Yorkshire – dismay was acute as their surprise. Before long they were more dismayed and sur- prised than ever, for-Todd got Bar berlbw at 46, and Hutton, struggling desperately for over an hour, was bowled by Watt-on-the- warpath at 48.17

QUEER RUN

Yorkshire a bit of heart at and Bryan switchedrøver to his spin-bowlars. The spectators emil- ed when Marriott took his run to the wicket. We know it well enough in the south, but Yorkshire found something very comic in that circling approach, and giggles guffawa went all round.
