ACHILLES INTER-CLUB ATHLETIC WIN

Achilles Club, with 29 points, won the inter-club contest of Read- ing A.C. at Reading with. 29 points. Blackheath H. and Surrey A.C. were joint second, each with 14 points. Achilles had the winner in four of the nine events-R. L. Trapnell (steeplechase), J. G. Barnes (quarter-mile), A. W. Sel- wyn (high jump), and A. Penning- ton (220 yards).

C. A. Wiard won the short sprint for Blackheath, beating W. E. N. Breach (Reading A.C.) by a yard in 10.6sec., with K. S. Duncan (Achilles) inches away, third. Wiard was second to Pennington in the furlong, beaten by six yards in 23.1sec.

St. George's Golf Cup

London, May 22.

With a record score for the event-144—D. H. R. Martin, the Oxford Blue and Eng- lish international, yesterday retain- ed the St. George's Champion Grand Challenge Cup..

In the second round on the Royal St. George's course, Sandwich, where the British Amateur Cham- pionship will be played next week, Martin had a score of 73.

ENGAGEMENT RING AS SECURITY

Miss Betty Nuthall's Dilemma

London, May 23. Miss Betty Nuthall arrived at the Chiswick Park Lawn Tennis Club yesterday to play in the Mid- dlesex championships, and found she had left her tennis kit at home.

She had to return for it. On the way back her car ran out of petrol, and, having forgotten her purse

• too, she had to leave her engage- ment ring at the filling station as security. Miss Nuthall eventually got back to the courts and won her match.
