CLOSE GAME AT BIRMINGHAM

London, To-day.

Only two matches in the whole of the first-class Cricket programme which concluded yesterday, did not reach a definite conclusion, Lan- cashire having to be content with first innings points against Somer- set, while New Zealand drew with Middlesex at Lord's.

Big victories were the feature, but a very interesting game was played at Birmingham between Warwickshire and Hampshire. The former batted first and, thanks to

WORTHINGTON IN FORM® Worthington, fresh from 'the M. C. C. tour of Australia, was res- ponsible for some excellent batting at Horsham. Scoring 90 in his first innings this fine batsman followed this up with an undefeated 133 and it was mainly due to his efforts that the Champions were able to secure Brooklyn a comfortable victory over Sussex, the first defeat inflicted on that County.

WELSHMAN TO MEET SCHMELING

London, To-day.

A crowd of 12,000 hysterical boxing fans saw Tommy Farr, of Wales, the British and Empire heavyweight boxing champion, strike another doughty blow for British boxing last night at the Harringay Stadium, when he knocked out Walter Neusel, of Germany, the European heavyweight champion, in the third of their scheduled 15 round bout.

TOMMY FARR, IN ELIMINATING THE MOST FORMID- ABLE OF THE EUROPEAN HEAVYWEIGHTS WITH THE EX- CEPTION OF MAX SCHMELING, OF GERMANY, PROVED CON- CLUSIVELY THAT HIS RECENT WIN OVER MAX BAER, OF AMERICA, WAS NO FLUKE AND ALSO AVENGED HIS PRE- DECESSORS IN THE BRITISH AND EMPIRE HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIPS, JACK PETERSEN AND BEN FOORD, WHO · WERE BOTH KNOCKED OUT BY NEUSEL.

'Farr conceded his Germany op ponent half a pound in weight, weighing in at 14 st. 734 lb. as against Neusel's 14 st. 81⁄4 lb.

The first two rounds were very slow affairs, the Welshman scoring with straight lefts, while Neusel attempted to wear down his op- ponent by continually going into clinches and attempting-in-fighting.

TERRIFIC BODY BLOW

The third round opened with Farr sending a lightning, blow to the German's face, the latter again attempting to clinch. Farr saw an opening, jabbed away at his op- ponent and suddenly waded into Neusel and shook the German with a terrific blow to the body, finish- ing him off with a right to the head.

Neusel who crashed to the canvas and took a count of four in sitting posture, was apparently rest- ing, but did not rise until the Re- feree had counted him out.
