A STONE— WALLING RECORD

TWO GAMES TAKE "ONE HOUR

Mme. MATHIEU BEATS Mme. SPERLING

Mme. Sperling, of Germany, whose record almost justified her being graded as the world's best in one or two years, has always relied on deadly safety.

By this she has worn her op- ponents out. She met Mme. Mathieu, of France, in the final for the Beaulieu title. By safety she led at -5—2. The French champion up to then had tried for brilliancy.

Right there she gave the German champion her own poison and a bit more: She evened at 5-all..

"It was exactly 11.30 when 5-all was called. At 11.55 Mme. Mathieu

·led at 6-5. How long some of the rallies were no one knows. The play consisted of lobs to the heavens, each waiting for the other to miss.

PATIENCE REWARDED

Such patience I have never seen,' says WW. Robertson, in “American Lawn Tennis." "But there was a reward. Finally, at Mathieu won the set. in one hour!

DOES IT AGAIN

THREE-TENTHS OF A SECOND OFF INDOOR MILE RECORD

(By “THE RANGER”)

ON May 17, at Madison Square Garden, New York, the Great

«Glenn1 Gunningham; king of America's milers, again asserted his supremacy in the classic Colombian mile, with a thrilling last- lap sprint that whipped his young Kansas rival, Archie San Romani, and carried him to triumph in the dazzling time of 4min. 8.7secs.

Cunningham's time was within three-tenths of a second of his own indoor world record of 4min. 0:8.4secs, which he made in 1934. He covered the last quarter-mile in 59.7secs. San Romani led for ten of the 11-laps.
