In the House of Commons, this afternoon the Chancellor of the Ex- chequer was asked to give the same assurance as was given by his pre- decessor that this country would not return to the gold standard sys- tem until he was satisfied that the causes which brought about the downfall of the gold standard in 1931 were removed and not likely to recur.

Sir John Simon replied that the conditions necessary before a return. to the gold standard would be pos- sible had been clearly indicated in the previous declaration which con- tinued to represent the policy of government on that subject. -Bri- tish Wireless.
