UNDERRATED HIS STRENGTH
English Criticism Of Ferrier
EVIEWING
the major
Revents of the year 1986, +
writer in "Golfing" remarks as follows on Jim Ferrier, former Shanghai boy:
"The British amateur cham- pionship was a thrilling tournament. Apart from Thom-.. son's sustained brilliance we had the somewhat uneasy spec- tacle of J. Ferrer, the lusty young Australian, going from proving strength to strength, that his earlier displays in the Northern Open Tournament and in the Scottish Amateur Cham- pionship were not a true crite- rion of his powers.
"We might have been warn- ed, on the very eve of the cham- pionship, by his exellent scoring on the Gleanagles Hotel courses Tassie. in winning the Silver But we preferred to believe that he was not likely to do so well at St. Andrews.
"Instead we reached the final day with only the imperturbable young Scot between Ferrier and victory. Thomson stood that final test like the very great golfer he is.
"Three down as early as the thirteenth hole in the morning he bided his time, allowed. Fer- rier to make mistakes, carried the fight to his golfing enemy. and finished him off with such a coup de grace as those who wit- ressed it will not readily for- get. It was a great finish to`z championship.
