It is not without significance that Lt. Stephenson plays for Essex in- stead of any other county. He shows his love of the game in a way that is not only exhilarating t

to watch but symbolises the county spirit perfectly. I cannot imagine Stephenson with Yorkshire or Lan- cashire!

Championships, therefore, do not concern Essex overmuch. But they strive as hard as any rival, all the same, and again T. N. Pearce and D. R. Wilcox will in turn lead the campaign.

OLD PLAYERS

All the old campaigners are among the new season's players with the exception of Cutmore and Sheffield, who have left. Nichols suffered from neuritis last summer, but he again made his 1,000 and took his 100 wickets. It is to be hoped that as a bowler he will not be overworked this season, for Kenneth Farnes can only turn out in a limited number of matches.

Essex are making a novel att mpt to solve the entertainment tax problem. They will ask the public to pay twopence in addition to the shilling charge for admission at the. turnstiles.

"WE WILL · BRING BACK DAVIS CUP"

Karl Quists Faith In Australian Team

Sydney, April 15. No man in Australia will watch the performance of the Davis Cup team in the United States with greater interest than Karl Quist, father of Adrian. When Adrian went away last year Kàrl was not too well, but the success of his som did much to cheer him up.

Karl played interstate cricket for NSW., W.A, and S.A., but tennis is the only game he watches now. His youngest son, Neville, is a likely interstate tennis player... He was in the last S.A. Linton Cup team. Another son, Bruce, play fair game.

"

| Karl could claim to have excell- led at most games, including cric-

ket, football, tennis, and bo

bowls.. Formerly an electrical engineer for many years he has been associated with sporting business in Adelaide. Karl thinks Australia will bring back the Davis Cup, but is a bit afraid of Donald Budge, who was Adrian's bete noir last year.
