WAR SCARE AND BELL PRICES

Japanese Buddhists Lose Out

Shanghai Japanese Buddhist priests now have another reason for damning war, the Shanghai "Mainichi" states.

In March, the Japanese Re- sidents' Corporation announced that it would give a Y.1,000 bell to the Higashi Honganji. Temple, Wu- chang Road, in commemoration of the sixtieth anniversary of founding.

its

Before the priests of the temple made up their minds as to where they wanted to order the bell, the prices of iron, stimulated by the current international armaments race, soared to record heights. Now, the journal noted, the sad priests can get a bell only half as large as the one they could gét before the war scare. The bell will be ordered in Kyoto.

With lumber and wages unaffect- ed by the boom in the munitions industry, the cost of building the bell tower will, however, remain the same, Y.500,-contributed by the J.R.C.
