TAX FRAUD CHARGES

New York, To-day.

The multi-millionaire indus- trialists, Pierre Du Pont and John J. Raskob, appeared yester- day before the Board of Tax Appeals in answer to Govern- ment charges of under-payment of income tax in 1929.

Mr. Du Pont is alleged to owe. the Internal Revenue authorities the sum of $617,316, and Mr. Ras- kob $1,026,340.

The Government alleges the two men engaged in fictitious "wash. sales" of stocks and shares to each other in order to show losses in their income tax returns for 1929.

The defence maintains the sales were legitimate and honourable and were made to each other rather than in the open market, in order to avoid still further depressing the market at the depth of the 1929 slump.
