He placed the money in a wallet which he left, on a table in his room. Some time that afternoon defendant extracted three notes, one of $10 and two of £5. ·

The loss was discovered by Cap- tain Cragg, who reported the theft to the Police, and the numbers of the missing notes were ascertained from the Bank.

As the result of enquiries defen- dant was arrested, questioned and detained. On Saturday he admitted the theft and took the Police to a furniture room in Government House where under a piece of canvas on a shelf he produced the notes.

Defendant had been in the em- ploy of several British officers and had taken only three notes in the hope that the loss would not be discovered until the complainant was on board the "Empress of Asia."

Sergeant Fraser added that de- fendant was a heroin addict and took a large quantity of pills daily. It was found that he spent an aver- age of over $2 a day on -heroin pills and as his wages were only $27 a month, could not afford it.

Mr. H. J. Cruttwell was in court.
