London Bus Strike At Midnightw
Solution Prospects Dwindle
London, To-day.
A strike by London busmen to-night is now, practically inevitable as a consequence of break- down in the negotiations between the men and the London Passenger Transport Board last night.
WITH THE CRITICAL NEGOTIATIONS TO AVERT THE LONDON STRIKE GOING ON THROUGHOUT YESTERDAY, THE COUNTRY IS ALSO FACED WITH THE POSSIBILITY OF A SIMULTANEOUS STRIKE OF MANY THOUSANDS OF BUS- MEN IN THE HOME COUNTIES.
A CONFERENCE HELD AT CHELMSFORD, IN ESSEX, YESTERDAY DECIDED TO SUPPORT THE MEN NOW ON STRIKE AND TO CEASE WORK AT MIDNIGHT TO-NIGHT.
THE LONDON STRIKE İS DUE TO START AT THE SAME TIME UNLESS THE MEN'S DEMANDS ARE MET, WHICH DOES NOT SEEM POSSIBLE FOLLOWING LAST NIGHT'S BREAK- DOWN IN THE CONFERENCE.
If the demands are met, how- ever, the busmen in the Home
Counties will also approach the GANDHI AND
Transport Union with the de- mand that the present Home Counties' strike be recognised officially and a conference called for the purpose of securing a na- tional bus stoppage.
With only 24 hours remaining be- fore the decision of the London busmen becomes opérative, the men's leaders were again summon- ed to the Ministry of Labour fol- lowing a two-hour conference be- tween Mr. Leggett, the Government mediator, and Lord Ashfield and his colleagues on the London Pas- senger Transport Board.
The two parties in the dispute had not met since the Ministry in tervened but separate talks by yes- terday had lasted a total of 21 hours, and the men expressed their determination to cease work to-day unless their demands were met, and the position is regarded as critical. The Board's buses carry 5,000,- 000 passengers
every week, and there are about 5,000 buses on the streets.-Reuter.

of
Allahabad, To-day. The working committee the Congress Party, before con- cluding its four-day session here, passed a resolution disapproving the appointment of interim min- istries in the provinces.
The committee also expressed the opinion that acceptance of minis- terial office by those not in majority was a disservice to the country.
The discussions were devoted to future plans for evolution of a uniform policy in the provinces to meet the contingencies of the next few months.
Considerable
divergencies
So far as is publicly known, the Transport Union maintains its demand for seven and half hours a day and the London Transport Board, while prepared to refer the issue to public enquiry or to arbitration, has not modified its urged an extremely militant pro- position that the demand cannot be met out of its finances. It is still hoped that a compromise may be found.

NATIONAL WALKOUT?
A National Strike on May 14th is mentioned in some quarters as a possibility but the general feeling is more optimistic and expects. a settlement.
On Same Footing As German Army
Berlin, To-day. By a decree signed by Herr Hitler yesterday, the Black the Fuehrer's Bodyguards and own Black Life Guards are placed on the same footing as the Army.
This has been done for the pur- pose of quelling civil disturbances, the Guards being entitled to use arms.
