YOUR ROOM

10 change the complexion of ful manner.

your room is to give it a new A NOVEL IMPLEMENT

lease of life with a fresh interest.

It is not difficult to do, for dis- tempers are so good and cheap nowadays that it is only a question of selecting the right colour.

The improvements that have been made in the manufacture of dis- temper have resulted in a greater range of colours and shades and a better texture of material.

It is possible, therefore, to ar range your walls to form à definite part in the colour scheme of your rooms, or to be a background that brings out the colours of your pic- tures and hangings, giving them more value and your room much more interest.

The secret of this transformation is selecting colour that suits the size and light of your room.

To begin at the top, do not have a white ceiling. If the window has a cold steady light from the north, tint it a pale straw colour; this will give the room a warm tone.

Then the walls could be a fuller shade of the same colour.

Finish up by staining the floor a warm nigger brown, that when waxed will reflect and add to the brightness of the room and its depth of colour:

MAKE YOUR ROOM FRIENDLY

This is all very well for a mo- derately-sized room, but in a big one with a lofty ceiling it is better to colour the ceiling and walls alike. This will make the ceiling appear lower and the whole room more friendly and less big.

If, instead of creating a sunny at- mosphere, you want something posi- tive, you can have tints such as shell, or beige, pink, flesh or apri- cot, and many other light shades that will make your room warm and bright, but at the same time give it more definite colouring.

It you aspire to mix your own colours or want one that is not or- dinarily procurable, you can buy white distemper as the base and then some “stainers" of the parti- cular shade you want. You can then stain the white until it gets down to exactly your tint.

TWO COLOUR SURFACES

Washable distempers or water paints are more durable, and cap- able of producing more varied ef- fects.

They can be stippled to produce a two-colour surface that is much more decorative than the level single colour of ordinary distem per. They are oil-bound, so come near to oil paint, but are better in that they produce an absolutely matt wall surface, where oil paint is inclined to. shine as the light strikes it.:

Should you feel you have a flair for decoration, and want to try something still more ambitious, you can make an altogether out-of-the-la common effect by using three col- [ours and arranging them so that together they produce a pattern with light and shade.

To obtain this result you have to use a novel implement, and that is a small sponge.
