While the conciliation department of the Min- istry of Labour is striving strenuously to avoid the threatened strike of 40,000 London busmen, the Transport Board has urged that the dispute should be postponed for a month in order not to disturb traffic arrangements in May.

Excessive Influx Of Metal

Washington, April 22.Vicente. Villamin, Filipino economist, stated last night that he had learned in a canvas of official sources that numerous plans are being studied to check the excessive influx of gold into the United States.A

The treasury department, remain- ed strictly silent on the question, except for making repeated press statements saying department policy has not been changed.

Villamin understood that alterna- tive plans under tentative consider- ation made no proposal to reduce this the price of gold, because would have a deflationary effect on farm and commodity prices gener- ally.

IMPORT TAX? A

The plans did include, however, a study of the effects an import tax on gold would have in discour aging imports of the metal.

Other plans under study were re- ported to include:

1. Suggestion that bankers voluntarily make an increase of 500 to 1,000 per cent. on the present service charge on importations.

2. Modification of the present gold sterilisation policy in order to enable bankers to hold gold sup- plies without being liable to suffer prosecution for “hoarding.”

3. Establishment ~ of a quota plan for gold imports, exclusive of gold imported for discharge of government obligations.

Villamin said he had not learned of any plan under study which might be applied exclusively to Philippines gold.
