NEW aspirant for the world's land speed record has arisen. unsupercharged cars produce speeds far beyond their designers' hopes, is building a strange car of his own design, with which he dreams of 375 or even 400 miles an hour.

A motor at

Dixon has recently removed from Middlesbrough to Reigate, Surrey, where he has set up workshops. The car he plans is revolutionary in almost every particular. It will, he says, be shaped like a dart or a hollow cigar. He will sit in the nose or point of it. "I am thinking of calling it 'The Dart,' he said yesterday.

All four wheels will be driven. All road wheels will steer in res- ponse to the steering wheel. None

these will act on the transmission. « The engine will be something entirely new. It will be a two- stroke, supercharged radial engine. It will have no crankshaft like an ordinary engine, the pistons are set radially about the centre and the drive is through an improved awash-plate.

Such is the efficiency of this en- gine, according to Dixon's calcula- tions, that he will get 350 miles an hour from 700 bh.p. Actually the car he is designing will have a .1,000 b.h.p. engine.

Dixon plans to attack the record next year, either on the Salt Lake beds at Utah, United States, or more probably on one of the great European motor roads.
