FUSILIERS LOSE IN POOR DISPLAY

CAMPBELL AND KILLEN SHINE

The Rifles took the lead in the First Division yesterday when they beat "the"Fusiliers by 1 clear goals at Prince Edward Road un- der very poor playing conditions.

The Rifles forced the pace almost from the kick-off and after netting twice in the first 20 minutes' en- joyed the majority of the ensuing exchanges.

An unfortunate series of injuries resulted in the Fusiliers fielding a greatly weakened team, Taylor. Roberts and Talbot being absen- tees. With the exception of the de- fence, the Fusiliers gave a poor display, there being a general lack of cohesion in an attack in which the most dangerous member was Coakley. The intermediate line was more often, than not, far too erra- tic, with the result that a clearance by the Rifles' backs found Moore and his henchmen with only Wheel- er and Keating to evade.

Rowlands had more than his share of work, the first half find- ¦ ing him effecting several smart

saves.

The conditions underfoot suited the Rifles and they made full use of their 'opportunities. Moore and Killen have rarely been so promin- ent while the fact that three of their four goals emanated from the work of the wings testified to the work of Ferguson and Erwin.

Campbell, who was making his fast appearance in Colony football. gave a fine display. Pickering and Stevens were very effective, Connor being called upon to save on little more than four or five occasions in consequence.

A low centre from Ferguson gave Moore his first goal and he added the second from a similar effort by Erwin.

Killen scored the Rifles' third goal and Moore added the fourth again from a centre by Edwin.

Jim Braddock, world's heavyweight boxing champion, dresses up in true woodsman style just to give the boys a glimpse of how he chops wood. He's shown at the National, Sportsmen's show, at New York, but he'll soon be in the country training seriously for a bout in June with Joe Louis, for his title.
