often happens that my idle, care-free life (which others often comment upon) gives me time for reading, and while flip- ping through a magazine the other day, I came across some pages of foreign cartoons.
I was struck immediately by their extraordinary lack of respect for us. I mean (as my wench Ophelia would say) we often make fun of foreigners in our cartoons, but who would have thought that they would have the sauce to make fun at us?
John Bull is far from handsome as the foreigners see him. On the contrary. he is a fat, coarse old
fellow with a snout of a nose and the extremely prominent teeth that are believed by foreigners to be the outstanding characteristic the British.
