In a neighbouring convent, fifteen out of twenty, nuns, were killed, many of them by bullets when the raiding planes swept the streets with machine-gun fire.

STREETS STREWN The streets were strewn with the bodies of non-combatants after the planes, which numbered nine, had left, while 150 were wounded.
