BACKS GIVEN PLENTY OF CHANCES AT GALASHIELS
TWO CLEVER
HALF-BACKS AVAILABLE
(By A. WEMYSS)
London, December 21.
THE experiment of playing a non-specialist pack of forwards in the
Scotland XV. at Galashiels met with only modified success.
For such a venturesome step, little more was expected, but judicious changes at half-time allowed the Scotland forwards to have a recognised hooker and that was sufficient to enable the tearn to prove themselves the better side and defeat the Rest by three goals, a dropped goal and six tries (37 points) to a goal, a dropped goal and two tries (15 points).
The forward play was more interesting than anything else. The Rest pack won the scrums in the proportion of three to one in the first half. When they had the assistance of Tait as a hooker the balance was two to one in favour of the Scotland forwards, though they did not then specialise, apart from the wing-forwards.
After the interval the Scotland pack were very good. There was always a raggedness in packing and considerable slow heeling, but their pace in the loose, their backing up în drib- bling and passing, and in touch-line play as well, at least provided the opportunities which the Scotland backs so easily turned to account. Moreover, every Scotland forward, after the changes had been made, played well.

They started the game with an obvious-inferiority complex and the Argonautas - should. never have been allowed to score their two early goals. After the game had been in progress a short while the Japanese suddenly appeared to wake up to the fact that the opposition were not so great ly superior to themselves and they then literally went bald- headed for the other team. A draw would have been the fairest result.
