BRIDGE NOTES

A Tremendous Swing

By Ely Culbertson

A sensational hand has just been sent me by an Australian correspondent, James J. Newman. His letter declared:

in

"The following hand which was dealt and played in a pennant bridge match in Melbourne May, between testas captained by N. Massen and 5 Champion shows that the seemingly impos- sible can sometimes occur. The teams concerned are leading in a competition, and the gigantic? swing of 3,300 on one band is probably unprecedented in com- petitive bridge.

and "At Table No. 1, North South called and made seven hearts. scoring 1,720 points. At Table No. 2, East and West called! ¡and made seven diamonds and scored 1.580 points on the same ideal, but playing the opposite hands to those on which the grand Islam was made at the other

table."

This colossal hand was: South, dealer.

Neither side vulnerable.
