WHISTLING ON THE PIANO

NHIS is the third of a series of ingenious" piano lessons”,

The principal idea is that anything you can whistle you can play on the piano. The course consists of four lessons, and after the fourth lesson we will give you a wamber of times set. down according to the system of numbering "you will have learned. By this method you can play by ear, with a simple harmonising bass at the left hand, and with full four-note chords at the right, any simple melodies that you can hum or whistle. Charts can be purchased at Moutrie's

NUMBERING THE KEYS THERE are eighty-eight keys on all standard piano keyboards, but they represent only the various place- ments of seven different notes. Num- bers are used in this method, in place. "of key names, to designate the seven different keys. The black keys are numbered one, two, three, five six, and the white keys that are used in this method are numbered four and seven, as shown on the keyboard chart placed Behind the keys in the illustration above. The chart shows one octave.

1351 is our first right-hand chord combination so we use 5.18 for the left hand or bass position an octave below the right hand position. Number 5-being played by the little finger of the left hand, number 1 with the middle. or long finger of the left hand and the left thumb on run- ber 3. Now play both hands together 1 3 5-1 with the right and 5 1-3 with the left. Chords 3 and 5 use the same bass and in the same position. Chords 2 and 7 use 2 5 7 in the bass and the same fingers as used on 5 13. Chords 4 and 5 have the same bass 1 4 6. Á alight change is made here, using the first or index finger on number 4. Play with both" hands full 7-chords or octave up and back. Here are the right hand chords with their proper bass? 1.35.1-267235,13,4614 5 135 61467257 135-1- 513 257 510 146 51314625.7 5134
