ENGLAND HAS BIG PROBLEM IN FINDING OPENING BATSMEN

HOCKEY VICTORY FOR ARMY

BUT WEAK CLUB ELEVEN SHINE IN PATCHES

2 POTENTIAL COLONY INTERPORTERS

THE

(By “STICKS”)

Army hockey eleven were featured in a very disappointing encounter yesterday when they beat the Club by 4 goals to 2 in their Triangular Tournament fixture, the Civilians fielding a very weak side which, however, man- aged to extend their victors.

The Army were much the stronger side and some dazzling attacking movements featured their display, two of their players being certainties for the Interport against Macau next February. I refer to Nerain Singh, inside-left, and Pataub, centre-forward whose individual brilliance in ball control outshone anything that has been seen in the Colony for some time. Their biggest asset, however, was their phenomenal speed and in this respect they were more than a match for their opponents.

The Club attack rarely shone, S. A. Fowler and Bond being forced to play lone hands owing to the inability of the wings to send the ball into the circle. Taylor; on the left-wing, showed a slight improvement in his stickwork, but is still not quite fast enough in centring, while Starbuck, on the right, very rarely saw the ball.
