CIVILIANS DEFEAT COMBINED SERVICES IN HOCKEY MATCH

SOCCER FREE KICK

AND THE SIGNAL

DERBY COUNTY-CHELSEA MATCH SEQUEL

A

HUMAN SIDE OF THE GAME

(By ALEX JAMES)

London, November 11.

MOST interesting letter bearing the Walham Green postmark has drawn my attention to the goal Derby County scored the other day from a free kick against Chelsea which led to a protest on the field and a controversy among the spectators which is apparently still raging.

My correspondent, quite wrongly I think, suggests that the referee allowed the kick to be taken. without a proper signal. According to the laws, the referee must give a signal before a free kick can be taken.

I cannot give an opinion regarding an incident I did not see, but I think most people like referees who are quick in their decisions. both to stop and restart play. so that as little time; as possible is wasted. I expect that the referee in this case gave his decision so promptly that many people failed to see it.

If too much time in the tak ling of free kicks is allowed, it often happens that the side sinned against, that has been and not the sinning side, is

penalised. If the side that has

committed the offence can get its defence properly positioned before the kick is taken, the punishment is often no punish- Iment at all.
