There was a serious fire at the Crystal Palace last evening.

The flames were seen and the crashing of woodwork and glass was heard miles away. Thousands watched the blaze. The roof of the central fransept. collapsed with a crash andible a mile away. Renter's Bulletin Service.

London: The Crystal Palace fire spread with as- tonishing rapidity, due to the wooden floors and window- frames. Within 20 minutes the centre part of the build- ing, including the roof and the famous west transept had crashed with a noise audible a mile away, and within an hour the north tower collapsed.” The whole structure is doomed. At 7.30 pm, the Crystal Palace orchestra was rehearsing when a girl employee to the Palace told the musicians that a small fire had broken out but was not dangerous. But five minutes later the flames barst in and the orchestra had a very narrow escape. A large section of the population of London flocked to the scene, blocking the roads and impeding the fire engines. *which responded in unprecedented numbers.

The Crystal Palace, among other things, was the cradle of television, and the whole Baird television 3p- paratus, worth many thousands, has been destroyed. The Members of the House of Commons, eight miles away, watched from the terraces of Parliament, re- flected in the glow.

The Government forces deny that the insurgents have been successful west of Madrid and claim that the Militia advanced several miles in the course of a counter- attack yesterday. At the same time they state that the Government columns on both banks of the `Tagus, 50 miles south of Madrid, are in a position to attack the insurgent, communications. The Governmetri also claim successes, in the province of Santander and allege that a force of Militia is operating only 40 miles from the rebel capital of Burgos and have occupied several vil- lages and killed 200 rebels.
