ARSENAL BEATEN BY
· DOUBTFUL GOAL
CARTER SCORES IN LAST MINUTE
London, October 29.
ALAST minute goal-by far the most thrilling incident in the game-gave Sunderland vic- tory over Arsenal in the FA. Charity Shield] match at Roker Park yesterday.
The winning goal was doubtful. Carter, the Sunderland inside-right, drove the ball in at terrific pace. It seemed to hit the bar. came out into play, and was immediately cleared by Joy, Arsenal's centre-half.
A linesman at the corner flag signalled that the bali had crossed the goal-line, and the referee, after consultation, awarded a goal. Sunderland deserved to win. They had the bigger share of the play in a goalless first haif, when many splendid oppor- tunities were missed by both sides.

ÞIG BILL” TIden and Ellsworth Vines treated a large crowd
"B to a more, enterprising display of lawn tennis than they
gave on either of their two former appearances, when they gave their final exhibition yesterday at the HK.CC. but Vines was not seen at his best-I believe they had a rough passage here from Manila, while the heat down there did not agree with the tall, Californian.
Tilden played brilliant tennis in spasms, and during these periods was undoubtedly the master of Vines, despite his 43 years. Elis backhand returns on Vines's cannon-ball services will long be remembered.. Though beaten 7-5, 4-5. 7—–—–5, 6—-0, he gave his best display in the Colony,
Vines appeared careless and listless, although his assays to the net were invariably productive of points.
Hong Kong has certainly
seen two very fine players în faction, but there is no question that doubles will appeal more, and in this respect I am glad to be able to state that Tilden is seriously considering making another Eastern trip next year in company with Vines and two other leading professionals.
Tilden and Vines are leaving to-night for Shanghai..
