GEN. FRANCO'S GOVERNMENT RECOGNISED BY ITALY AND GERMANY

PRESENT-DAY NEROS WATCH ROME BURN LURID FLAMES COVER MADRID

FANTASTIC SPECTACLE IN RUINED CITY OF DEATH

Lisbon, To-day.

"We are like Nero watching Rome burning." remarked the popular toreador Pepe, now a Nationalist officer, watching the operations from the tower of General Varela's headquarters. The remark was apt. for lurid flames stabbed the night-sky all over Madrid. Hundreds of flaming parachutes fluttered down from aircraft, enabling the bombers to choose their targets easily. The whole insurgent General Staff and newspaper correspondents watched the fantastic spectacle from a distance.

In a message from Madrid Reuter's special correspondent, Mr. J. R. Allwork, venturing out during a brief lull, states that he was appalled by the destruction. He saw huge craters in the main squares resembling scenes from a war film. The correspon- dent went to visit a friend on the Mendijabal Street and found that both the friend and his house had disappeared.

FRANCE DENIES RIGHT TO SEARCH FOREIGN SHIPPING

London, To-day.

Both the German and Italian Goverments have decided, to recognise the Government of General Franco, an Italian com- munique states, now that General Franco's Government has taken possession of the greater part of Spain and the development of the situation makes it continually more evident that in the re- maining part of Spain it is impossible to speak of a responsible Government exercising power. The Fascist Government has de- cided to recognise the Government of General Franco and to send him a Charge d'Affaires to open diplomatic relations. The pre- sent diplomatic representative has been recalled, and the Charge d'Affaires is learing immediately.

The German communique follows similar lines and adds that a new German Charge d'Anaires is proceeding in due course to the seat of General Franco's Government. The German Charge d'Affaires at Alicante has been recalled. Following the Gennad and Italian recognition of General Franco it is understood that the British Government has ne întention of departing from" the policy of non-intervention in Spain.

Paris: The recognition of General Franco's Government by Italy and Germany was ex- Ipected in authoritative French
