Fact-Finding Hearing Opened

`PACIFIC UNION LEADERS ·

WALK OUT

New York: To-day.

As the sit-down strikes have spread to the Atlantic and Gulf ports and are jeopardising the entire U.S. shipping, the Mari- -time Commission has opened a fact-finding hearing at San Francisco in an attempt to solve the deadlock. but the repre- sentatives of the Sailors' Union: of the Pacific walked out, de- claring that they objected to the opening statements, and re- fused to submit the case to con- troversial issues. The hearing was resumed without them.

The liner Virginia, one of the largest in the United States, due | to sail from New York to-day for the Pacific coast, has cance?- led the trip owing to the strikes. Five hundred passengers are having their money returned. The Virginia was the 19th ves- sel tied up through sympathy action.
