PLEA FOR
MITIGATION Razor Slashing Case
At Sessions
CHIEF JUSTICE POSTPONES SENTENCE
An eloquent plea was made by Mr. Leo d'Almada, jnr. on behalf
William of Fusilier Gronert, Royal Welch Fusiliers, when the latter was charged before Sir Atholl MacGregor at the Criminal
Sessions this:
morning with wounding Chan Chan Ho, Chan Kam and Chan Ying, three women, on the night of September 13, last.
The defendant, who admitted all the charges, was stated to have a good Army record by: Lieut. N. R. G. Bosanquet, RW.F. who was present in Court throughout the proceed- ing. This officer also told the Court that the fact that Gronert had pleaded guilty to the charges did not necessarily mean that he would automati- cally be discharged from the Army.
Counsel's Plea
Addressing the Court, Mr. d'Almada said that Gronert had a good record and was clear of even minor trouble since January 1935. "At first sight." said Mr. d'Almada, "it would seem that there were no but after mitigating features considering the whole circum- stances, Your Lordship could Comc to no other conclusion than that only the lightest sen- tence would be sufficient for this man.
"His record had been so good) as to have made him worthy of being in the Military Police.
