MURDEROUS GUERILLA

WARFARE

VALLEYS ECHO TO MOORS WEIRD BATTLE-CRIES

London, To-day.

A first-hand account of the murderous guerilla warfare be- ing waged in the hills west of Madrid is given by Reater's special correspondent. Mr. Christopher Holme, with Colonel Monastero's column in the Credos Mountains.

"At dawn to-day a fortress high above the village of Adrada was occupied by Colonel Monastero's troops. The Militiamen de- fending it had at midnight abandoned beautifully entrenched positions around the fortress without resistance. From a van tage point in the fortress this morning I watched a mixed column of-Moors and regulars sweep forward and chase the enemy out of Solillo, the next village on the road to Madrid," states Mr. Holme, "advancing through wooded mountainous country with the object of ensuring the safety of the left-wing and northern communications.

"Colonel Varela's army is making the main attack on the capital. The insurgents pursuing the enemy's rearguard made the first contact on a ridge 7.000 feet above sea-level, where 600 Militiamen grimly fought for their lives among olive and_pine trees, dodging among the tree coverts and low stone walls in which the terrain abounds. The valleys echoed to the weird battle-cries of the Moors as they charged, evidently enjoying every shot they fired and shooting to kill every time. The Militia men present stiff resistance at first and then crumble away.”
