REDUCTION DE TRADES BARRIERS

London, To-day.

Yesterday's events, including Italy's devaluation of the liza and, modification of the import restric- tions, Mr. W. S. Morrison's impor- tant speech \ _at":"Geneva, '-' and the French - Minister of Com- merce's announcement that France, following Saturday's reduc- tion of tariffs and the aboli- tion of some import quotas, is elaborating a Customs tariff-from which quotes will be entirely ex- ¡cluded, have created a favourable impression in London, and the mar kets generally have had an optim listic tone.

Great prominence is given in the papers to the speech delivered at. Geneva yesterday morning by the Financial Secretary to the n. Treasury in the commission of the Assembly which deals with social and economic questions. Mr. Mor- rison emphasised that the opinion expressed by the League's Econo- ic Committee, that currency ad- justment could not bring lasting jimprovement unless it were accom-

panied by relaration of direct and - indirect import restrictions in the shape of quotas and exchange cons itrol, and declared that the reduc-i tion of 'barriers so as to allow im- ports to adjust their price levels was the logical concomitant of card {rency`realignment.
