NOT AFRAID TO PRACTISE

WHY U.S. GOLFERS SWEEP THE BOARD

BRITISH WALKER CUP DEBACLE

NOT

(By C. B. MacFarlane)

London, September 4. TOT to have won a single Walker Cup match is a sad blow for British golf. America retained the trophy at Pine Valley, New Jersey, by winning nine matches to none with three halved. The result is as amazing as it is de cisive, but the Americans had made bets that we would not win a single point! Even the British captain. Dr. W. Tweddell went so far as to say that we would not win the Cup.

I wonder if we ever will do so? The Americans seem to become robot golfers in the big events, and their mechanical precision in recent years has been something to aim at, but even Henry Cotton, with much intensive training, has not mastered the technique of a sound patting styles department of the game which never seems to desert the golfers over there.

We may and do play our games for amusement and exercise, but all American golfers give the impression that they prepare themselves for these big events. One has only to take into con- sideration the amount of practice they put in. Not only before: & match but very often afterwards they go to the practice ground with four or five dozen balls and correct a fault which has crept into their play.

September 22. WITHOUT a trace of resentment for having been called "yellow" by his opponent and displaying the same machine-like precision that had spelled defeat for better fighters, Joe Louis to-night knock-out Al Ettore in the fifth of a scheduled 15-round bout.

The Brown Bomber conclusively proved that he was still a major threat to Jimmy Braddock's heavy-weight crown by de- feating Jack Sharkey and the Blond Tiger after that disastrous setback at the hands of "Der Maxie" Schmeling.

Shortly after the gong in, the first round, the dusky destroyer loosened a crashing right to Ettore's jaw, sending him to the floor for the count of five. The Italian-American fighter, however, was game and in the third round came back strong with a series of hooks to Louis' head and body. Ettore won this round.

In the fourth round, Louis fired terrific straights andi
