It is believed here that the insurgents' great thrust on Madrid will come from the south-west via the Tagus Valley. The insurgents at present have only thrown a semi-cirde round Madrid. The other half-circle is open, enabling the Government to communicate by rail with Catalonia and the south-eastern pro- vinces. The critical railway junction south of Madrid is Aran- jue, 62 miles from the nearest insurgent outpost of San Tolalla. The efforts of the Government will henceforth be concentrated on preventing the insurgents' closing the circle round the capital.
