RELAY TRIUMPH
LAWRENCE'S POOR TIME
IN HALF MILE WIN
< LADIES' TITLE FOR MISS V. THIRWELL
(By "Crawl"}
ALTHOUGH no new records were set up in
the second day's programme of the Colony swimming championships held in the Victoria Recreation Club pool yesterday, some thrilling swimming was witnessed in the 880 Yards free- style, which was retained by W. Lawrence, the] Ladies 100 Yards free-style, which was won for the first time by Miss V. Thirwell, and the 200 Yards Open Relay, which was secured for the third consecutive time by the Hong Kong University Swimming Club.
Much disappointment was felt at the inability of several intending participants to compete in the half-mile championship: only three competitors starting, and as a result the race revolved round Lawrence and L. Roza-Pereira, who gave him a great race until the quarter mile mark, when the champion gradually drew away to finish in very poor time, or 14 3-5 secs, slower than his Colony record established last year.
Luis Oliveira, the University's fastest swimmer over the 50 Yards, arrived in the Colony resterday morning from Shanghai by a coastal boat, and changed the whole aspect of the Open Relay, as hitherto the University team were doomed as E. L Gosano. their second string swimmer, wrenched a cartiledge during cricket practice on Monday. Oliveira, however, made a world of difference and the "Varsity can be very proud of having retained the title for the third consecutive year..
