CHARLTON'S AMAZING
PROGRESS
VILLA PLAYING WITH JUNIORS
EVERY soccer season has its thrills, its sensa-
tionals and its tragedies, but seldom has one provided as much cause for comment as the 1935-36 season. Some of the closest League struggles for years, the startling collapse of two of the most famous sides in English soccer, even more Cup triumphs than usual for smaller "fry,” drastic action on the part of the League Manage- ment and the establishment of some spectacular new records-all played their part in making it a season that will be long remembered.
The 1936-7 season, which commences this afternoon with a! full programme of English League fixtures, in addition to the Scottish League, is most interesting in view of the many pro- moted teams and the fact that Aston Villa, probably the most famous football club in existence, are making their debut in the Second Division.
The Villa could not manage to budge more than a single place in their desperate efforts to escape relegation to the Second Division, though never in the history of the game has a Club Player after endeavoured to bring about so many changes.
player was secured, almost every one was famous, and the total cost was in the region of £40,000, but they failed to blend as a
team!
Sunderland, the present League champions, seem more than likely to win the First Division championship once again, judging by the ease with which they "strolled home" last To-day they will re- ceive a good opening test of
season.
