COATES BEATS GUTIERREZ TO WIN OPEN SINGLES BOWLS TITLE
INTERESTING® ARMY AQUATIC HEATS WEALTH OF TALENT IN 220 YARDS EVENT DIVING & WATER-POLO PROSPECTS
(By "Crawl")
THERE have been swimming events galore over the past week and the outstanding event was undoubtedly the second batch of Army swimming trials which were held in the Victoria Recreation Club swimming pool last Wednesday morning, while the Royal Engineers' swimming finals on Tuesday night were also pro- ductive of some outstanding features.
The original Army trials were held in the European Y.M.C.A. swimming bath (fresh water) on August 5 when. owing to several unavoidable absentees, the heats proved dis- appointing. Lieut. Lewis, who is in charge of the Area Swim- ming and is one of their best men over the 50 Yards free-style, was then clocked at 27.3-5 on the 5th instant, although he was a fifth of a second outside of this time last Wednesday morning. The fastest 50 yards to date was performed by Cpl. McCarthy (East Lancs.) last Wednesday, when he clocked 27 1-5| secs., but even then he wasted at least half a second in turning. McCarthy has improved beyond recognition, and if he shows any further improvement within the next month or so, he will be a serious threat in the Colony Championships over this distance.

Coates was a worthy winner, but full marks must be given to Guterriez for the splendid way in which he pulled up after OVERFLOWING being 4-17 down at the 12th head. Interesting Fixtures For The Season
ST. BERNARD'S LOSE GOOD MEN
Edinburgh, July 11. When the football season opens not followers of the game will lack opportunity for seeing their favourite teams. Saturdays will as usual, be reserved for Scottish League matches, and the open- |ing games in that connection are bound to have plenty of "spice" about them, but in addition mid- week extras have been arranged on a scale to satisfy the keenest football appetite.
The evening, Zare will include, Scottish League matcnes, East of Scotland Shield ties, and exhibi- |tion or benefit games, a list which suggests variety at least. Inter- esting studies in styles should be possible when the Autralians visit Easter Road on August 17, and again when Chelsea and the Ar- senal appear at Tynecastle the following month.
For those with a preference for the competitive element, the Lea- gue matches with Dunfermline Athletic at Tynecastle on August 19, and Albion Rovers at Easter
Road three weeks later will have a strong appeal.
