SHELLS DROP 40 YARDS ASTERN OF P. & O. LINER CHITRAL WARSHIPS OPEN FIRE ON REBEL PLANES

FLYING OVER GIBRALTAR

Lisbon, To-day:

The three loyal Spanish warships which bombarded Cadiz were bombed and sunk by insurgent aircraft, according to the Seville radio, controlled by the rebels.

A Hendaye message states that San Sebastian is reported to have been recaptured from the rebels.

According to a Gibraltar message great excitement prevailed there when Spanish warships lying near Gibraltar opened fire on rebel air- craft, which flew over the rock to escape the shells. Shells exploded over the naval cinema and the Royal Air Force headquarters, while -shrapnel fell close to the Rock Hotel and Catalan Bay village. No ca-

sualties are reported.

A party from three Spanish warships came ashore and requested fuel, which was refused. The warships then left.

Barcelona: The Air Force has sent peremptory orders to the rebels at Saragossa to surrender or be bombed. A military tri- bunal is expected to start functioning in Barcelona to-day to try the large number of prisoners.

Madrid: The main battles between the Government and the rebel armies are still awaited, but in the meanwhile the Govern-) NEW PROBLEMS INTRODUCEDment claims the captures of Tolden, Alcazar and Guadalajara, and forces are expected to advance on Seville, where the fighting of the local rival forces is continuing.
