"MAN OF ARAN”...KING'S
THEATRE
This picture is a fascinating hu- man story of the struggle to earn a livelihood of the islanders off the coast of West Ireland. The picture opens with a breath-taking thrill, the three principal actors being nearly overwhelmed and swept to sea with one of those sweeping "ninth waves" of a rapidly-flowing tide.
The folk of the Aran íslands live a hard life, wresting susten- jance from nature with determina- tion and courage. The charm of the picture lies in its unrivalled closeness with nature and the cheery optimism with which the lislanders go about their daily business-whether it is making a potato patch on the barren lime- stone rock, fishing, or harpooning | the basking shark. Thrill follows thrill in these exciting encounters, but even the desperate nature of
this work is overshadowed by the tremendously engrossing
sceres
of a ferce south-west gale, with a "boiling" sea, threatening to sub-i merge not only the people but the islands.
