EIGHTH ANNUAL VOLUNTEER SWIMMING SPORTS TO-NIGHT

HOW AMERICA WON

WIGHTMAN CUP

EXCITING FINISH TO

BRITAIN LOSE VITAL LEADS

(By A. Wallis Myers)

Wimbledon, June 15.

ALWAYS facing an

adverse lead, never despairing of reducing it, the American women's team retained the Wightman Cup at "Wimbledon by the minimum margin, and after a thrilling finish at seven o'clock. That the invaders deserved their success is indicated by the odds which faced them and which they dis- counted so zealously on both days.

Their sixth successive victory. unlike the other five. was gained without their present champion. Miss Helen Jacobs, win- ning a point in singles. She was beaten in two sets by both Miss Stammers and Miss Round.

A totally unexpected handicap for the holders.

an attentive ear to whispered words from champion Jimmy Braddock who" may or may not be pouring words of advice into the Black Uhlan at his Napanach training camp. One thing, however, was sure and that was that Max would face a tough assignment in New York in the person of Joe Louis. He, however, won on a knock-out in the 12th round and will now meet Braddock for the world championship.
