JAPAN'S NEW AQUATIC BLOOD FOR

RETRIEVER

America's Coming Tennis Star

KNOWN AS RARE FIGHTER

("By "LEIGHTON")

London, June 24, Bryan Grant, the small, why American, lawn tennis ace has a great reputation. He spells “Dan- ger in big red letters for the world's best tennis players at Wimbledon. So say his mates, five of them, who have ac- companied him on the trip to {Europe.

team

(He was beaten in the quarter- finals at Wimbledon by Perry, the holder.]

Well, Grant does not look the part. He is rather frail, and thinking of him against Perry, Crawford, or Von Crammn it is hard to visualise him winning.

But don't be misled. Grant, so they say, is as strong as a horse and runs like a stag. Wilmer Allison and Van Byn declare he is! the speediest man about a court they have encountered.

A champion retriever, he gets to! balls which, theoretically, should. leave him standing-and he breaks his rivals' hearts.

Pace That Wins

They do not call Grant by his Christian name, Bryan, but talk of him as "Bitsy.” I don't know why.]

So many of these tennis players are decorated with nicknames which convey little.

out.

That, of course, is nothing against Grant, who must be a rare fighter, seeing that he has paced and beaten Allison, red- haired Donald Budge, and Vines.

Better Armed

All of these are better summed with strokes, but they cannot gef] the ball back with the same re- gularity as the fleet-footed Grant.

And that, after all, is what counts. What matters style, so long as you keep putting the ball back? The player who can do sa Saccani cannot lose...

BERLIN

BRILLIANT ARRAY OF SWIMMERS

CONCEDED EVEN CHANCE FOR WORLD TITLE

400 METRES WILL BE BEST RACE

HA

Tokyo, July 3 ALF a dozen swimmers hitherto unknown to international fame carry the burden of Japan's hopes for victory in the speed swimming events of the Olympic Games at Berlin in August.

The emergence of the Nipponese stars in the tryout meet held in Tokyo just before the team left for Germany has greatly bolstered Japan's chances of turning back the challenge of America's brilliant young swimmers, who will be seeking at Berlin to win back for the United States the aquatic champion- ship the Japanese snatched in such startling fashion at Los Angeles four years ago.

If Japan had only her veterans to rely on-speedy as they may be it would be almost a certainty that the Americans would recapture the Olympic laurels which always were theirs until the 1932 debacle. But there are strong reinforcements of new blood in the team of 22 stars that started for Berlin last month. The Japanese team was due to reach Berlin on June 26 last and have six weeks for training.

The line-up is studded with names known to swimming fans the world over; such, for example, as: Masanori Yusa, a great sprinter, member of the winning 800-Metres relay team at Los Angeles; Shoji Kiyo- kawa, the 1932 Olympic 100- metres Back-Stroke cham-

pion and captain of the 1936 team; Yasuji Miyasaki, 1932 champion at 100 metres Free
