MISS STAMMERS IN BRILLIANT FORM
MISS JACOBS EXHAUSTED IN WIGHTMAN CUP GAME SPLENDID TENNIS WITNESSED
(By A. Wallis Myers)
London, June 13. THE Wightman Cup has not yet been regained by England from America, but yesterday, on the centre court, at Wimbledon, the British women established a lead of two matches to one.
To-day the position is one up with four to play. It is al most promising lead, and if one did not remember that England held the same advantage in New York last year after the first day, only to find their opponents winning the first three matches on the second day, the victory bells might almost be rung now. It was a strange first day. Until the rain checked the first set between Miss Stammers and Miss Jacobs, after the 21st game, I had never seen two girls play 50 minutes of such riotous exciting tennis on the centre court-or, indeed on any other
court the world over.

which was played on the Civil Ser vice Cricket Club green last even- ing and 'which resulted in a win for the Pofice pair by 18 shots to 10.
Despite the comfortable margin by which the Police pair won, the match was very keenly fought out, and the fact that the end of each head found almost all the woods clustered together round the jack speaks volumes for the accuracy of each player.
The honours of the evening must go to Cavanagh, whose efforts pre- vented: Greig and Mair from win- ning by a bigger margin-he often. came in with his last couple of woods, to save the situation when his opponents were lying three "or even four.

It has just been decided that the next quadrangle tourne- ment here shall be under the new leg-before wicket rule.
The quadrangular "tourna ment is recognised as the most important cricket event of the year and it is believed, there- fore, that the Cricket Club of India cannot now fell to fot- low suit, thus giving the new rule India's official recognition.

These evening galas are intended to give the swimmers a better chance to keep in training and as the programme takes but an hour and a half, concluding at 7.30 p.m., it gives the partici- pants the opportunity for having a long rest before the next day's work commences.
Practically all the events this evening are on a handicap basis with the exception of the relay, diving and, of course, the water-polo match between selected teams, which will bring the evening's sport to a conclusion.
