NOMADS BEAT MUFTIES

Some fairly exciting polo was witnessed at the Polo Club head- quarters at Boundary Street: yes. terday, when two games in the American High and Low Handicap Tournaments were played, result-: ing in wins for the Nomads over the Mufties by 7 goals to 6 in the

former, and No. 1 team over No. 2 team by 3 goals to 1 in the latter.

In spite of the intermittent rain which fell throughout the day the turf was fairly firm and The there were no casualties. rain which fell after the second chukker in the High Handicap match made little effect on the ponies hold on the turf and, if anything, the pace quickened appreciably.

In spite of receiving a handicap of three goals from the Nomads. the Mufties were beaten in the High Handicap game, which was

fea- tured by some splendid hitting and good riding.

Major Shannon and Major Cur- rie were in fine form for the win- ners, while Newbigging and Stan-! ton shone for

Close Struggle

The Low Handicap match be- tween No. 1 and 2 teams, although not quite so fast as the other match, provided a very close strug- gle and with both teams starting from scratch the former won by 3 goals to 1:

The winners manoeuvred their ponies much better than their rivals, Col Rodwell being in fine; form with the mallet, scoring two good goals. Minshull-Ford and Butcher were the pick of the: losers, although Henriques sent up some fine hits. The ponies did not appear to be weathering the softer conditions (they played their last chukker after the rain) as well as the High Handicap match ponies and consequently play was not quite as fast...

Penang, June 19. Penang confounded all critics this evening by holding the Chin- ese Olympic football team to a goalless draw. The visitors were. firm favourites, as many as six goals being given in their favour, but they found the Penang defence impregnable.

Never before has so much in- terest been evinced in a foot- ball fixture at Penang as in the match this afternoon, and from two o'clock all roads led to Victoria Green. When the match started the ground was full to capacity and every point of vantage was occupied.

The weather was ideal and the crowd well over 10,000.

The visitors were undoubtedly the better team. They combin-

ed well and their ball control was beautiful They also attacked for most of the Srst half but goal- |scozing proved too difficult.
