QUARRYMAN'S LUCK
A quarryman in a roadside pit by the little village of Stone, near Wittersham, near Rye, sank his pick into the stone-face and pulled out a bit of pre-history.
He had unearthed a piece of fossilised bone. He examined it. put it on one side, and continued Ito dig. He unearthed another piece of bone, and another, until altogether he had found $0.
A local palaeontologist saw them and was interested. He got! into touch with.... the British Museum, who sent an official down to inspect them.
Colossal Reptile
The bones proved to be those of an iguanodon, a colossal rep- tile-which-had-died-on this spot millions of years ago-50 jons ago that scientists do not measure the time in years, but in rock-l strata. Certainly, it was long be- fore the advent of man.
It is not unusual to find frag- ments of an iguanodon in. the Weald country, but this one seems to have been a sturdy specimen- 30ft. in length is the rough guess, jat present, judging by the thick-
ness of some of the bones.
