SERMON ON THE MOUNT
GERMAN BISHOP'S NEW
VERSION
OLD TESTAMENT OBLITERATED
Berlin-The German Primate, Ludwig Mueller, has just published, under the title, “German Words of God.” a “Germani- sation”—the word “ranslation” is rejected-of the Sermon on the Mount, intended to appeal to Nazi tastes.
The book contains 42 pages, and a preface in which the Reichsbishop states that he is "making the word of God com- prehensible to those who have lost touch with Christianity." In the opinion of the Confessional Church, the organ of which sharply criticises this book, it is the Reichsbishop himself who has lost touch with the Bible.
The following passages com- pared with the original of Sti Matthew, Chapter 5, show how! justified this criticism is. Verse 4. "Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be. comforted, is rendered:
"Happy is he who bears his sufferings manfully; he shall find the strength and power never to lose courage and to despair."
Verse 5. "Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth," now runs:
"Happy are they who live and work honestly and loyal- ly, but are nevertheless per- secuted and slandered: for they shall
preserve COM munion with God.” Verses
21 and 22 become: "Thou shall not assassinate. The assassin is guilty andTM must be condemned to death. You must realise that murder is the result of an inner deve- lopment which begins with jealousy, envy and hatred. He who harbours such thoughts is already guilty.”
"Happy is he who always shows good comradeship, for Verses 38 and 39. "It hath he shall succeed in the world." Verse 9. "Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God, becomes:
