MILLIONS CHEER FRANTICALLY
ALL WATERFRONT SITES FILLED TO CAPACITY PANDEMONIUM OF DEEP-THROATED AND SHRILL SIRENS
New York, To-day.
The city went mad yesterday when the Queen Mary docked at 9.03 p.m. British Standard Time, taking exactly 25 minutes. There was no mis- hap, but there was an anxious moment when a tug rammed its bows against the liner and nearly capsized.
The liner left quarantine at 7.37 p.m. amid a pandemonium of deep-throated and shrill sirens from hundreds of craft of all sizes. The liner's triumphal progress to the $10,000,000 pier was frantically cheered by millions of holiday-makers on the waterfront. The windows and roofs of the skyscrapers were black with people and Union Jacks fluttered from all the highest while hawkers in the streets did a roaring trade in

General Pai Hsung-hsi, rank- ing Kwangsi military chief, who visited Canton during the past two weeks, is organising five new divisions, to be form- ed from 20 regiments of the militia for the purpose of de- fending the province, according to a report received here last night from Nanning.
Ramours are still persis- tent that General Chiang Kai- shek, President of the Execu- tive Yuan, is demanding that General Pai Hsung-hsi and General Li Chung-jen, the titular head of Kwangsi, should go abroad, otherwise Kwangsi will be invaded and bombed by Nanking troops and planes. Confirmation of these rumours is not avail- able.
It is not stated why these two generals have been asked to leave their province, which is well ad- ministered and is known as 2 model province.
In the event of hostilities be- tween Nanking and Kwangsi, the attitude of the Canton military faction is very important. The sharp rise of the premium of the Hong Kong dollar to 644 cents to the dollar indicates that there is jsome nervousness in Canton.
Kwangsi is not likely to give. up anything without a struggle.
