FOUR SHANGHAI CHINESE SENTENCED

Four Shanghai Chinese em- ployed at the Hong Kong Elec- tric Company, appeared before Mr. W. Schofield at the Cen- tral Magistracy this morning four charged with assaulting washermen at Chun Yung Street, North Point, yesterday. The defendants were ordered to pay $10 compensation or serve three weeks' imprisonment, and sentenced to two months' hard labuor.

Sub-Inspector Madgwick said that there was a fight at the above place, in which over 100 persons had gathered, and but for the timely arrival of the police there might have been serious SEQUENCES.

Bamboos and stools were used during the fight and one of the complainants was rendered conscious as the result of a blow in the stomach with a pole and had his nose broken.

+

The cause of the fight appears to have been abusive language use to the wife of one of the de- fendants, while she was making purchases in that street. There was a quarrel, during which the woman is said to have stated that she would get a gang to beat 'up the people who teased her.

NANKING TROOPS MOVING NEAR KWANGSI FRONTIER

(From Our Own Correspundeat)

Canton, To-day.

A sensation was caused to-day by the report that there have been movements of Nanking troops in Hunan and Kweichow, close to the Kwangsi borders.

The Kwangsi military authorities are said to be much con- cerned over these troop movements and are criticising the Nan- king authorities for their failure to make a firm stand against Japan.

Some anxiety is felt over the report that the military authori- ties bere have recruited 10,000 coolies for the transportation of Charles Alfred Scadding and Dr. Edward Robertson, rescued after their arms and military provisions. This means that trouble may be long entombment in the Moose River, Nova Scotia, gold mine last month, are expected from Nanking.
