In the House of Commons yesterday, replying to Mr. F. Seymour Cocks, (Lab., Broxtowe), Mr. Anthony Eden, Foreign Secretary, stated that Warrant Officer L. J. Bunner was denounced by a Turk as a naturalised Ethiopian and by an Ethiopian boy as Captain Rudolph Brunner. The Italian authorities interrogated Mr. Bunner on May 17, and put him into custody for the night in a room which is described as an incinerator. Fearing that he might be shot, he escaped during the night, but was again arrested on May 20.

The British Consul saw him on May 21, look- ing none the worse. The Consul secured his im- mediate release on undertaking to produce him when required. This satisfactory outcome was achieved by vigorous representations to the Ita- lian authorities.

The difficulties were accentuated by Mr. Bunner's ignorance of any language but English, the absence of a passport, the mili- tary character of his rank, the working instructions found on him from his superiors, and finally his attempted escape. Undoubted- ly M. Bunner should not have been held in close arresi on the night of May 17, after the British Consul had sponsored him. It is understood that this was an act of inferior officials misled by the statements of lying witnesses. Reuter.

In the town of Nablus in Samaria, midway between Jerusalem and Haifa, the Arab insur- gence is increasingly centring itself.
