MARRED by unfavourable weather, inter- mingled with thunder and lightning, con- ditions at the Valley last Saturday on the occa- sion of the Fifth Extra Race Meeting were far from pleasant. The rain which came down just prior to the first race undoubtedly kept many away, but the day's racing on the whole was keen- ly contested, in spite of the heavy state of the track.

'Riding honours among the jockeys were evenly distributed.. Mr. H. C. Pih taking pride of place by virtue of two wins and a second. Messrs. Deitz and P. P. Botelho also had two wins, and Mr. C. F. Chiu scored his first victory by masterly handling of Mayflower in the race for Novices.

The absence of Able Amazon in the Brisbane Spring Handicap for "A" Class Australian ponies over 1 miles robbed this race of its importance, but Strathroy (Mr. Black), carrying 165 lbs. on a sodden track, demonstrated its superiority in no un- certain manner. This pony is undoubtedly the best among this year's lot of Australians and, in view of its rapid progress, it will indeed be a great battle when Strathroy and Able Amazon clash on a hard track.
