ATHLETIC TRIALS

ONLY ONE IN 12 FAILED

(By George M. R. Holmes)

New York, April 17. SOME days ago William J. Bingham, manager of the United States Olympic track and field team which will compete in the games at Berlin next August, gave out a list of times, heights and distances which should be taken as standards for those candidates who are to compete in the semi- final trials.

They were given out by the track committee in order that unnecessary expense would not be incurred by sending athletes to those trials who have not shown ability to meet those standards. A glance at the standards set shows that the athletes

will have to be very good and the ultimate winners come pretty close to the present Olympic records for the various events.

Seventeen Olympic events were given in the list issued by Bingham. The runs were given in metres and the field events in feet and inches. The corresponding distances for the runs were also given in yards, with standard times for each, and, as it is with this system of measurement we have to deal here, it

is those standards which will be considered at this time.
