SEASON'S BIGGEST RACING CROWD SEE DIANA BAY WIN EASILY

SANDY HERD LOOKS

BACK 50 YEARS.

"THERE'S NO SCIENCE IN

GOLF NOW"

MOTORING MADE SPORT POPULAR

(By Henry Longhurst)

London, April 28.

SANDY HERD has played in championship golf for 50 years, and to-morrow the Moor Park Club and other golfers are giving, him a celebration dinner in London. He entered for the Open Championship for the first time in 1885, at the age of 17. In 1911, at the invitation of the late Mr. J. F. Abercromby, he came to Coombe Hill, and has been associated with London golf ever since.

Golf in Sandy's early days was a very different thing from the game that is played in 2,000 clubs in the British Isles to-day. "Why they used to lay out courses without any bunkers!" said Sandy "They just used to put up anything they could find to get in the way I have even known them use ordinary hurdles. Any little hollow would do for the green, and of course all the hedges left for them to pitch over.

There were several keen tussles for honours, but the day's racing was marred by the unfortunate accident which befell Mr. D. Black. The numerous supporters of Bear Claw in the High West Handicap, which was also the first leg of the "Daily Double," had their hopes rudely shattered when this pony galloped past riderless. How Mr. Black actually get dislodged was not clearly visible it seemed that he was crossed at the start and al- though he did not suffer more than a rather bad shaking, it was, sufficiently serious to prevent him from taking further part in the day's racing.

Though it had nothing to do with Mr. Black's mishap, the sharpness of the bend coming into the straight has always been unfavourably commented upon, and last Saturday this angle was more acute. There is hardly fficient room for the ponies to thereby resulting in congestion turn in the case of large field with the danger of spills constantly menacing the riders. It is
